Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan

In 2023, Bumi Baru was hired to restore a 20-hectare plot of severely degraded land in Central Kalimantan, where the removal of the natural green cover had exposed the topsoil to extreme heat, strong winds, and acid rain. The soil on the site was 94% sand, porous, nutrient-poor, and unable to retain water.

Our solution

In September 2023, Bumi Baru began restoring 16 hectares of land on the pilot site, using enhanced rock weathering and regenerative agroforestry. The company decided to plant banana trees to provide income for farmers, sequester higher amounts of carbon, and incentivise the locals to protect the trees.

The outcome

In May 2025, Bumi Baru received its first harvest of 108,000 kilos of bananas, becoming the first to offer a solution to the problem of degraded in Central Kalimantan. To date, the company has harvested more than 307,000 kilos of produce from the pilot site, and is testing the growing of cacao, coffee and durian.

Bumi Baru was the first to pioneer the transformation of degraded soil in Central Kalimantan. The site is now operating as a productive banana plantation and is proof of concept for our restoration solution.
